What is the best time for beach portraits.

Updated: 2 days ago

Simple. One hour before sunset. Even 10-15 minutes AFTER sunset

If you’ve ever seen a beautiful beach portrait with warm golden light and soft colors, chances are it was taken just before sunset. Professional photographers almost always schedule beach sessions during this time of day—and there’s a good reason why.

Sunset provides the most flattering natural light, the most comfortable conditions for families, and the most beautiful atmosphere the beach has to offer. Here’s why sunset sessions consistently produce the best beach portraits.

The Light Is Soft and Flattering

During the middle of the day, the sun is high in the sky and creates strong shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. This kind of lighting can be harsh and unflattering in photographs.

As the sun begins to set, however, the light becomes softer and more diffused. The sun sits lower on the horizon, which creates a warm, gentle glow that evenly illuminates faces and reduces harsh shadows. This “golden hour” light helps skin tones look natural and warm, making everyone look their best in photographs.

Beautiful Golden Colors

One of the most magical aspects of sunset beach photography is the color. As the sun lowers toward the horizon, the sky begins to shift from bright blue to warm tones of gold, orange, and soft pink. These colors create a stunning natural backdrop that simply cannot be replicated earlier in the day. The sand reflects this warm light, the ocean glows with subtle highlights, and the overall scene feels calm and timeless. The result is photographs that feel warm, romantic, and full of atmosphere.

Cooler and More Comfortable

Beach sessions during the afternoon can often be hot, bright, and uncomfortable—especially during the peak summer months along the Jersey Shore.

By scheduling portraits near sunset, the temperature begins to cool down and the light becomes less intense. Families are more relaxed, kids are more comfortable, and everyone enjoys the experience much more. This relaxed atmosphere translates directly into more natural smiles and authentic moments.

Fewer Crowds on the Beach

Another advantage of sunset sessions is that many beachgoers are beginning to pack up for the day.Earlier in the afternoon, beaches can be crowded with umbrellas, chairs, and large groups of people. By the time the sun begins to set, many of these distractions disappear.

This gives photographers cleaner backgrounds and more space to create beautiful family portraits without distractions.

A Relaxed End to the Day

For families vacationing at the Jersey Shore, sunset photography sessions often become a memorable part of the day. After dinner or an afternoon at the beach, everyone gathers for a relaxed walk along the shoreline while the sun begins to set.Children can play in the sand, parents can enjoy the view, and the session becomes a natural extension of the vacation experience rather than something that feels rushed or stressful. The result is genuine moments that reflect the joy of spending time together at the beach.

The Perfect Time for Jersey Shore Beach Portraits

Because of the beautiful light, comfortable temperatures, and peaceful atmosphere, sunset is truly the ideal time for beach portraits. That’s why most professional beach photographers schedule sessions approximately one hour before sunset.

This window of time allows photographers to capture the soft golden light, the colorful sky, and the relaxed mood that make beach portraits so special.

If you’re planning family photos during your Jersey Shore vacation, scheduling a sunset session is the best way to ensure timeless images you’ll treasure for years to come.

You Can Shoot on a Cloudy Day

Believe it or not if it is a cloudy and overcast day then that actually makes for very nice lighting for beach portraits. There is no shadows to worry about, no bad sun angles and is often times cooler. I absolutely love overcast days because it really makes my subjects "pop" and standout ! Don't overlook the cloudy days !

Now Which Beach Has The Best Lighting

There is a stretch of beach on The Jersey Shore which has the absolute best lighting that I have ever shot in. It's warm, it glows, it's comforting. Where is it ? Well I am not going to tell you ! That's my secret. But if you book with me and you happen to be in that location then by all means we will have the session at that location !
